In February 2004, Dr. Paul Ehrmann presented the preliminary components of CHIP to 20 Oakland County high school representatives. When they agreed that most communities want to do something about this problem but need some tools and guidance to do so, the group made the decision to go forward. Organization and planning committees were formed and development began.

The plan for a five-week pilot emerged, designed to actively demonstrate the most basic and important lifestyle practices and illustrate the long-term benefits of weight management and exercise. It offer a fun and participatory activities that bring basics of both disciplines into the program and is based upon the premise that the responsible adult in each household must take responsibility for the child's personal success in adopting healthy choices.

Although the pilot is local in scope, the CHIPS model will be standardized so it can be applied in other communities. Any community with motivated teams of individuals (physician, dietitian, school administrators and community leaders) should be able to replicate it. Grant money may be available from a variety of sources to help support the program Designed to produce measurable results, the program is jointly overseen by the program's medical director, Paul Ehrmann, D.O., founder of the Family Health Care Center in Royal Oak.

The program is fully endorsed by the program's schools coordinators, Thomas Shorkey, Royal Oak Schools Superintendent and Barbara Evoe, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction of Royal Oak Schools. A planning committee of representatives from medical, service, civic, small business, education and parent groups have provided input into the program's design.

Each week of the pilot will have a separate but complementing focus, beginning February 23, 2005:

  • Week One: OVERVIEW of program and goal setting. This session is for parents and children, conducted in the school gym. Conduct baseline attitudinal survey; goal setting and selection of goals; motivational speaker former Detroit Lion Scott Kowalkowski; physical activity for students.
  • Week Two: LEARN about nutrition and benefits of eating healthy. Conducted at school, led by dietitians. Review progress and renew commitment; students play games that reinforce concepts about nutrition while dietitian makes presentation to parents; physical activity for students.
  • Week Three: LEARN how to use knowledge of nutrition to plan a day's menu. Group meets at two local grocery stores. Tour of behind-the-scenes areas to learn how food is kept fresh and nutritional for customers; exercises stress good nutrition choices and label comparisons.
  • Week Four: IMPLEMENT AND APPLY nutritional information by demonstrating the cooking of healthy and delicious foods. Conducted at Kimball High by chef. Content including healthy appetizers, main course and dessert. Chef explains food being served, healthy cooking techniques and may provide recipes.
  • Week Five: REINFORCE and MEASURE concepts learned, at this conclusion session, conducted at school gym. Report on and reward progress toward goals; activity for students; awards and feedback.
