Obesity Tops List of Biggest Health Problems For Kids in 2008 Childhood obesity tops the 2008 list of the biggest health
problems for children in an annual public survey conducted by
the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital's National Poll on Children’s
Health. This contrasts with the 2007 survey, in which obesity
was rated third, behind smoking and drug abuse. Those
problems remain in the top 3 in 2008. |

The Big, Fat American Kid Crisis The problem is all too obvious. At the mall, the movie theater or the airport, the evidence appears in the flesh - altogether too much of it. Growing problem Dr. Paul Ehrmann is as concerned as Robinson about the growing number of obese children. As a family physician he's seen weight skyrocket over the last 27 years. That's why he founded the Children's Health Initiative Program (www.chipkids.com), the topic of his session on Sept. 27. Ehrmann, a West Bloomfield resident, was recently honored as one of Crain's Health Care Heroes. His book, "Generation XL Ð The Childhood Obesity Pandemic: A Community Based Solution," tells how to implement the no-cost, 5-week CHIP program. It is due out at year's end. So far three pilot programs have involved himself, a psychologist, registered dietitian and physical therapist covering the topics of nutrition, positive lifestyle modification and the psychology behind weight gain. |
